Courses are not currently being run but work is underway to enable this.

RYA courses are available to serving forces through a variety of means and these should remain the primary route for these ranks. Ocean Dragon will look to train serving members dependants at a discounted rate in order to get families qualified. The courses we would be looking to run are as below.

Competent Crew

During the course your instructor will teach you all the basics of sailing a cruising yacht. This will include sail handling, helming, trimming sails, knots and rope work, mooring, anchoring, rules of the road and much more. By the end of the course you will have covered around 100 nautical miles and 4 night sailing hours. You will have gained the confidence and knowledge to make you a useful crew member on any yacht. No previous sailing experience is required.

The RYA Competent Crew sailing course is 5 days. This can be completed as a 5 day course, or a combination of a 2 day module and a 3 day module.

Day Skipper  Previous experience required: Recommended 100 miles logged with 4 night hours, understanding of basic navigation (Shorebased Day Skipper course)

The RYA Day Skipper course covers all aspects of skippering a modern cruising yacht, including boat handling, navigation, pilotage and seamanship skills. You will skipper a short passage during your course under the watchful eye of your instructor and gain the experience and confidence to allow you to skipper a cruising yacht in familiar waters by day. It is recommended that you will have already logged over 100NM and have an understanding of basic navigation.

The RYA Day Skipper course is 5 days. This can be completed as a 5 day course, or a combination of a 2 day module and a 3 day module.
